In long-term care settings, ineffective communication leads to confusion,frustration, and even tension between the family and long-term workers, and also can contribute to undesired outcomes or adverse events of older adults. Part of these communication challenges can be attributed to health literacy of older adults and family caregivers. The health literacy challenges in this context include navigating and understanding long-term services and supports that are available and accessible.It can be extended for referring information asymmetry during care decision making as older persons maintain their health or lifestyle in the community.
To avoid ineffective communication and to ensure quality of care in long-term care settings, it is crucial to bridge the health literacy gap by exposing our students to those contexts and instructing them in proper skills of better communication. During the course, students will work with the instructor to develop communication scenarios in long-term care settings. Students can construct ways of effective communication and learn from how it can be proceeded.
